Jef Huysmans visited the University of Lapland.

As a visiting Professor at the University of Lapland, Jef Huysmans delivered a course on the International Political Sociology of (In)security in the Faculty of Social Sciences. The lectures explored four approaches that help to understand how social, political, and international processes combine to problematise contemporary issues of concern related to the politicisation and social construction of insecurities: the field of security actors, the everyday embedding of suspicion within societies, the governmentality of humanitarian borders, and the sociology and politics of forensic methods and witnessing. At a seminar organised by the Research Group on Welfare, Work and Citizenship, he presented reflections on citizenship in times of insecurity. He also liaised with staff members for his research into the challenges posed by recent changes in European security for critical security studies, drawing on complex socio-political security developments in northern Finland.
