Launch: IPS the Netherlands - Call for Papers

Seminar Series in International Political Sociology (2024)

EXTENDED DEADLINE: 15th of December

After two successful years, the third iteration of the Dutch IPS Seminar Series seeks to continue the promotion of International Political Sociology’s (IPS) commitment to challenge methodological and conceptual assumptions, and invites scholars to ask new questions about transdisciplinary modes of inquiry. As part of the international research group “Doing IPS,” the Dutch IPS network provides a forum for junior and early-career scholars interested in transdisciplinary modes of inquiry to present and get feedback on their research.

In 2024, we will offer, once again, a forum dedicated to IPS where early career scholars can: (1) present their work and receive feedback from peers and senior academics in the field; (2) engage with contemporary IPS research designs and debates; and (3) develop transdisciplinary and cross-institutional relationships with a view to facilitating further discussions and collaborations around common research themes.

We invite you to join us for the 2024 seminar series and continue to develop this as an open space for collaboration.

Aims
As a transdisciplinary approach to the field of International Relations, IPS offers a wide range of analytical perspectives and empirical research strategies to understand and approach global politics and social relations. IPS can be thought of as a collective intellectual project which rejects traditional boundaries between disciplines and knowledges. It seeks to challenge fundamental oppositions within traditional theorising, such as that between politics and society, the individual and the collective, structure and agency, internal and external, international and national.

Themes in IPS

We welcome papers that speak to IPS and affiliated themes including:

●       Critical theory and methodologies (e.g. critical making, multi-modal methods, or fieldwork methodologies)

●       Migration, mobilities, and borders

●       (In-)Security and surveillance

●       Technology and STS (Science & Technology Studies) (e.g. algorithmic politics, platformisation, digital infrastructures)

●       Critical race theory and global justice

●       Coloniality

●       Queer, trans, and feminist theory

●       Conceptions of the planetary

●       Climate change and ecology

If you have an idea or paper that does not fit into one of these specified themes, but you think may be relevant for IPS, please still apply.

Seminar Series

This third IPS Seminar Series will run monthly from January/February to June 2024. During each two-hour seminar, two participants will present a piece of work-in-progress (between 6000-10,000 words of a thesis chapter, book chapter or journal manuscript). Each participant will invite a senior academic to act as a discussant. The discussion will be followed by questions and comments from the seminar participants. All attendees are encouraged to participate regularly and actively.

All sessions will be held online or hybrid. We intend to organise at least one physical event as part of the IPS network for scholars to come together and connect offline.

Applications
Applications for the IPS Seminar Series should include:
